A budget is needed to release an album

So many indie artists and bands will scrape enough money together to press up 1,000 CD's and then they release it and hope for the best. That is not a great strategy to make a full career in music. I tell artists all of the time that they need some kind of budget to release an album properly. If you do not have a budget, then save up your money and do it right. Below are some expenses you may have to deal with when releasing an album.

Manufacturing
Distribution
8 by 10 promo pictures
Press kits
Business cards
Posters
Post cards
Stickers
One sheets
Music submission fees
Gas money (When traveling to do interviews or CD signings)

Depending if you are just doing a local release, or a national release, this may be just the tip of the iceberg. The point is, you need money to make money. Many artists have this misconception that promoting an album is basically free if your music is hot. That is not how it is. This is a business and everybody wants their cut of the money. It costs money to promote. Major labels spends a ton of dough for an album release, and the artist is expected to pay it all back through record sales.
