A record deal is basically a bank loan

What many new artists do not realize is that when you sign to major major label, you are essentially signing a bank loan. Depending on how large the label is, they will usually give you an advance on your future earnings. They do this so you have money to live. They will need all of your time to record and promote. Then anything you do is charged against what you owe. Everything from airline tickets, to a simple fax will be charged back to you somehow, someway. Then when your album is released, they expect you to make back all of the money you were fronted. There have been some cases where an artist failed to deliver all the albums they were signed to do and the label sued them for all the advance money. Of course if you do not sell well, you will be dropped from the label and deemed not profitable. The label will also want all or most of your publishing money.
All these things can be negotiated if you have a decent enough lawyer.
