Understanding microphone placement

Where you place your mic is an important factor when recording. When recording vocals, you should do a few test recordings to see how loud or quiet the vocalist is. Make sure the height of the microphone is positioned where the diaphragm is slightly above the singers mouth. To get a solid level from a vocalist who doesn't sing too quiet or too loud, place the mic about 6 inches away from the vocalist. If you have someone who is quiet, place them a bit closer. If you have a loud singer, place them 8 to 12 inches from the mic and adjust your levels accordingly. Always use a pop filter to cut down on 'plosives. Placing a microphone too far away might cause you to pick up unwanted sounds from in the room. Just be careful and use your ears.
