Musicians: Do not be afraid to invest in yourself
Let's face it, if you want to be a somewhat successful independent recording artist/musician, you will need to spend money. It takes money to make money. This is one thing you should not be cheap about. Especially when it comes to promotion and image. You want to look as professional as possible. If you look half-assed in any way, you may not be taken seriously. Spend the little extra that will put you over the top and be on an even playing field with the major labels. There are a billion other musicians out there all wanting the same thing. You need to stand out. This is very important. Think about all the money major record labels spend to get their artists out there to be known to the listening public. Do not be cheap. Stay within your budget, but do not be cheap at all about your career. Many indie artists these days think everything should be handed to them and that things come free. It does not work like that at all. Nothing is free in the music industry. This is a business and should be treated as such. The icing on the cake is doing what you love to do, which is create music!
