What is the RIAA and what do they do?

The RIAA is the Recording Industry Association Of America. They represent record labels and music distributors. They are located in Washington DC. What does the RIAA do for you as a recording artist?
They help protect the intellectual property rights of recording artists, they do research about the recording industry, and they monitor laws and regulations. They also administer Gold and Platinum records. Although the RIAA is constantly fighting to stop music sharing websites and pirated copies of music from circulating, some artists feel that file sharing can help a career. Some people feel that in the future, music will be given away for free and artists will make money from touring and merchandise.
