What it takes to make a career with music

Making a career as a recording artist can be rewarding but extremely difficult. Most people in the industry agree that it is getting harder and harder to sign a major label deal. It is almost like winning the lottery. You can still make a solid music career as an independent artist if you have the money and time. You will have to sacrifice so much time. First off you will need money. Like any business, and do not forget that music is a business if you want to make money from it, you will need some starting money to record, manufacture albums, promote and market and more. If you really want to get solid reviews and interviews it would be wise to hire a publicist. If you do not have the budget for that then you can do it yourself. Start small with local newspapers and magazines and build from there. You will also need to tour. Again start local and build your fan base. Do not expect to make a ton of money from doing shows at first. You may even have to sell your own tickets just to earn a spot on stage. Do not be ashamed to do this. All artists have probably done it at one time or another. Promoters want to see if you draw a crowd or not and by having you sell tickets is a sure way to prove that.
If you have the fan base then it should be no problem. If you do not then get more fans any way you can. Get a website, Facebook, Reverbnation page and more. Hit up every college radio station to play your latest single.
Do all you can. Live your music 24/7. Be a self promoter.Once you get a decent fan following things will get better and better. Eventually when you have a following you will want to sell t-shirts and other types of merchandise at your shows and on your websites!
