Promoting your music online

When promoting your music online, always take note of who you are really promoting to. You want to get your music heard by fans and music lovers. The problem is that many indie musicians are constantly promoting their music to other musicians. Yes, other musicians listen to music but at the same time they are trying to sell music as well. That is like Mcdonald's trying to promote their food to Burger King. You want to focus on real fans who will spend money on music. Do not get me wrong, it does not hurt to post links of your music on Facebook or Twitter to other musicians, but when you are constantly posting your links to promote your songs in Facebook groups that are all musician based, it is not gonna do much for you in the long run as far as sales. Networking it may do wonders for but the real key here is to promote to non-musicians. The true fans.
I know it is hard to promote to people online because many of them will consider you spam so you have to think outside of the box and not come off as spam. Build a true fan following online. Run contests on Facebook with music trivia and the winner gets your CD, use social networks to promote your shows and so on. There are many ways to do it you just have to use your brain and be creative.
