Musicians! Surround yourself with a good team.

When you are trying to make music a career then the first thing you must know is to surround yourself with a solid team that will always have your best interest at hand. I strongly advise that you avoid using family and or friends to conduct any of your business. Money and family do not mix. Money and friends do not mix well either. Hire a pro to take care of things. This is where you will have to spend money to make money.
Here is a list of people vital to your music career.
Lawyer: If you want to be taken seriously in the music industry, you will need a good entertainment lawyer.
They can help with contracts and any money situation.
Manager: The manager will help you with everyday career decisions. They should have multiple roles and should always give you the final say.
Tour Manager: The tour manager should do everything with booking shows, selling merchandise at the shows, negotiating show contracts and making sure to collect the money. The manager and tour manager will assist each other and sometimes cross roles.
Publicist: A music publicist’s main role is to make sure that the overall image that the artist wants to project is maintained at all times. The publicist will also perform such tasks as arranging and supervising interviews, releasing statements to the media, and overseeing the marketing and communications material that's distributed to the public on the client’s behalf.

These are the most important people in your career. Sometimes unsigned artists will just have a lawyer and a manager and the manager will handle all other things. This is fine until you can afford to hire others.
